Lithuanian Airports (LTOU) announces that Vilnius Airport's central traffic scheme is now open to traffic after reconstruction, with major works completed a month earlier. The new square in front of the terminal has more than 400 parking spaces for cars and buses, dozens of charging points for electric vehicles will be installed in the near future, new bicycle parking spaces are already in place, new signage has been installed, green areas have been created, special shelters have been built to protect against precipitation and other solutions have been put in place for a better passenger experience and to help passengers manage traffic flows.

It is said to mark the end of the first phase of a major upgrade of the passenger infrastructure, and marks a significant step forward towards a completely renewed airport in the capital, which will also see the launch of a new departures terminal next year.

The investment in the renovation of the central square amounts to €9.5 million. In total, almost 30,000 square metres have been reconstructed.

"The new traffic circulation scheme opens up opportunities for more efficient handling of car and public transport flows. This is particularly important as we complete other reconstruction works at Vilnius Airport and look ahead to the imminent opening of the new departure terminal, when we will double the capacity to handle the flow of departing passengers at the capital's airport as early as next year," says Arnas Dūmanas, Head of the Infrastructure Development Department of Lithuanian Airports (LTOU).

These changes have made the central square at Vilnius Airport more convenient for arriving and departing drivers and passengers. A clear traffic pattern makes it easier to navigate and manoeuvre around the airport.

The taxi and shuttle service areas have also been upgraded and more conveniently located. New public transport stops and a new circulation scheme will help passengers to move more smoothly and quickly towards both the existing and the new departure terminal.

Part of the new central square is covered by a special shelter to protect visitors from rain, snow or the hot sun when arriving at the airport to drop off or pick up passengers.

According to LTOU, the whole logic of the old traffic pattern has been fundamentally changed and the current solutions allow vehicles to circulate more efficiently, largely avoiding the wrong arrivals, and allowing drivers to meet or drop off passengers more easily.
